Monroe house is an older, historic home located a few blocks west of Missouri State University. The area is mostly residential and populated by university students. County records indicate it was built in the early 1900's, but it has been well maintained and features many modern conveniences while at the same time retaining much of its original architecture and style.
There are six main rooms: three bedrooms, a parlor, a living room, a large kitchen, and 1 1/2 baths. In addition, there is a large basement, half of which is used for mechanical equipment. The other half is suitable for storage (i.e. bicycles, hobbies, etc.). The parking lot, south of the house, is for the exclusive use of the residents and can accommodate 4 or 5 vehicles. The front porch provides an outside, covered sitting area.
Residents pay their own utilities. The Landlord maintains the house and landscaping. Service calls are generally responded to on the same day when received.
There are two hot water heaters in the basement which provide a total of 80 gallons of hot water. This is useful as the house has a washer & dryer, dishwasher, etc. Also, there are ceiling fans in all the main rooms; they help circulate the air and control the utility expense.
Of particular interest are the four stained glass door transoms. These reflect the rural nature of Springfield in earlier years and provide an artistic statement. The floors are original wood with the exception of the south bedroom which has carpet.
The lower left photo shows the front porch of Monroe House. The lower right photo shows the south side of the house. This is the location of off-street parking and the rear entry to the house. The lot can easily accommodate 5 vehicles. The SE corner of the house is the location of the large master bedroom. The SW corner, visible through the trees, is the location of the small bedroom.
